International Folk Concert programme announced

This year, for the first time, are pleased to introduce a programme of international folk music to Manchester Folk Festival. On Saturday 21st October, Festival Wristband holders will be given exclusive access to an afternoon of International Folk Concerts, presented by South Korea, Sweden, and Flanders.

South Korea (presented by Seoul Music Week)

BAND ON THE WALL
DOORS 1.30pm (2.00pm – 4.00pm)

groove&

Gonia – A jazz group with a sophisticated understanding of Korean rhythms and high-level performances.
Gray By Silver – Piano, Voice, Daegeum (Korean traditional wood wind), Drums. Their music is based on ‘originality’ of modern music, high ‘receptivity’ from jazz, and ‘Ethnicity’ from traditional music.
groove& – Three women Korean traditional percussionists. They play lots of percussion, and make new songs based on the Korean beat.


Sweden (presented by Music Export Sweden)

HALLÉ AT ST MICHAEL’S
DOORS 3.30pm (4.00pm – 6.00pm)

Symbio

FRÄNDER – FRÄNDER play modern acoustic folk music forged in the deep forests of the North. With seductive harmonies, heavy grooves and mesmerising energy the band create a unique musical landscape filled with mystery and charm.
Northern Resonance – A Scandinavian string trio that takes newly composed folk music into enormous soundscapes. With their previously untested combination of instruments; viola d’amore, hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa they let Scandinavian music meet explosive rhythms and grand chamber-like arrangements that takes folk music in a new direction.
Symbio – With their strong stage presence, original compositions, and a magical interplay of hurdy-gurdy and accordion – The duo has become a phenomenon on the progressive folk & world music scene.


Flanders (presented by Festival Dranouter)

HALLÉ ST PETERS
DOORS 3.30pm (4.00pm – 6.00pm)

Broes

Broes – Founded in 2009, with Florian De Schepper (guitar) and Anouk Sanczuk (violin), and later joined by Elke De Meester (chromatic accordion). They experiment with new folk sounds, seasoned with lots of exotic influences and improvisation.
Marvara – The international party band of Belgian bagpipe player Marieke Van Ransbeeck. They perform highly energetic folk music composed by Marieke. The music reflects her experiences and memories from a breath-taking musical journey in the Nordic countries.
Tom Theuns & Aurélie Dorzée -With the use of extraordinary instruments (viola d’amore, mandolin, mandocello) and haunting vocals, they perform contemporary folk without fronteers.
